New Players

Welcome to Red Knights Paintball! Here are a few things you should know if you would like to come play with us.

We welcome new players and anyone who would like to try out paintball. Our games are fun and sometimes intense, but they are low-pressure. No one keeps score. Our goal is to make sure everyone has a good time and plays safe.

What to Expect

Paintball is a great way to spend time with friends and get some exercise. Keep in mind, everyone will get shot at some point. Most of the time getting shot with a paintball is like getting slapped with a rubber band. It stings for a minute, then you forget about it. Sometimes it leaves a mark. We check each player’s marker to make sure they are shooting at safe speeds. Players intentionally trying to hurt other players, including by increasing the speed of their markers after the safety check, will be banned from playing at our field.

You will need to sign a waiver before playing in your first game. If you are under 18, your parents will have to sign it before you can play. The waiver is available to download here.

What happens at a game largely depends on your playing style. Games typically last anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour, depending on whether we allow players to respawn or not. In between games we clean off paint, hydrate, and sometimes reorganize sides.

Aggressive players move around on the field a lot. Some try to sneak over to the other side. They don’t use as much paint because they are moving more than shooting. These players typically get shot out earlier in the game but can cause a lot of problems for the other team before they get out.

Defensive players typically play in one or two spots and don’t move position often. They use a lot of paint. They support the aggressive players by keeping the other team’s heads down, allowing their own players to move around the field. These players typically get shot out later in the game, but not always.

Front bunker players use a TON of paint and take a lot of splatter. They are the eyes of the team – they call out positions of the other team and direct fire. These players have to be very careful of incoming grenades and aggressive players coming around the sides. They typically take more headshots than other players.

Sniper-style players are good at blending in and using the terrain to their advantage. They use very little paint and have to be very patient. In some games, they never fire a shot. They are great for protecting the flanks and keeping players from attacking from behind.

What to Bring

  • Signed waiver – download it here. Parents must sign if you’re under 18. You cannot play without a signed waiver, period.
  • Sturdy clothes you don’t care about – most paintballs don’t stain, but sometimes they do. If it’s going to bother you to have your clothes stained, wear something else. Jeans and a t-shirt are great. Shorts are not recommended. Some players wear Army-style BDUs or paintball-specific clothes. Whatever makes you happy.
  • Boots or good shoes – the terrain is rocky and uneven in places. Hiking or work boots are preferred. Something with good ankle support will keep you happier through the day.
  • Paintballs – you can pick up a case of 500 for dirt cheap or a case of 2000 for bulk savings. Any brand will do as long as the case is fairly new and the bags are not opened. Old paintballs usually break in the gun and don’t work well. Frozen paintballs are just stupid. They won’t work anyway and if we catch you with them, you’re banned.
  • Any paintball equipment you have – if you have an old marker in your garage, or something a friend gave you, bring it. If it doesn’t work, we can probably fix it. We’re always in need of more equipment for players, so if you have it, bring it and we’ll check it out.
  • Pocket money – air fills cost $1 per fill for all players. Snacks and water are free, and are paid for through member dues. Emergency repair parts are available for $1-$5. All money goes into the team account and is used only for team-related expenses.

Borrowing Equipment

If you are new to paintball, you can borrow equipment by contacting our Supply Sgt. We can provide an entire set of equipment to borrow for new players. If you are unsure if paintball is for you, let us know you’re interested and we’ll make sure you get the chance to try it out.

If you have decided you like the sport and want to continue playing, we expect players to purchase at least one of the following items no later than the third game they play at our field. This keeps equipment available for new players and helps keep abuses to a minimum. This list is in order of importance. If you aren’t sure what to buy first, this is the order we recommend.

  • Paintball mask – any certified mask will protect your face and eyes from injury. The cheap ones retail for about $20. This is an easy item to upgrade later after you are sure of what you want.
  • High Pressure Air (HPA) tank – we cannot fill CO2 at the outdoor field, so make sure any tank you buy is for HPA or “nitrogen (N2)”. We have scuba tanks available at the field for easy fills ($1 per fill) so buying a large tank is not necessary. New steel tanks retail for around $50-60. Carbon fiber typically starts around $100.  Keep an eye on hydro dates when buying a used tank. Any tank out of hydro will cost $35 to recertify at the dive shop. If you are looking for a tank, contact the Chief Technician. We want to make sure you get what you pay for.
  • Paintball marker and hopper – this should be the last thing you buy. It’s usually the most expensive piece of equipment so it’s important you get one that suits you. Most of our players will let you test fire their markers to see if you like them. Make sure you get one that fits your playing style and your budget. We recommend non-electric triggers for outdoor games since they are easier to service if something isn’t working correctly.

We expect all players to have a full set of equipment after their first season of playing. Preference for loaner equipment is given to the newest players. For example, if we have a brand new player and a player who has played 3 games who both need to borrow an air tank, the tank will go to the brand new player.

If you borrow equipment, please be courteous and clean it before you return it. We have towels available to wipe down equipment after the games.
